Public Statement Concerning Arrest of Student

Hanover School Division can confirm that Steinbach RCMP were called to Steinbach Regional Secondary School on Tuesday March 14, 2017, after being notified of a youth carrying weapons in their backpack. The weapons had been safely separated from the youth without incident before police arrived. The youth was arrested under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

As per the RCMP news release reported in local media, the incident was handled immediately and with professionalism by SRSS Staff and attending RCMP Steinbach Detachment Officers. At no time were students or staff in danger. Items recovered included knives and an Airsoft replica firearm.

Hanover School Division reminds all parents & students that there is a zero tolerance policy for weapons of any kind in any school. The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance, and we are thankful for the assistance of the RCMP in this matter.
