Hanover School Division partners with the Steinbach Credit Union to provide SRSS students with a unique opportunity in financial education.

Steinbach, MB. April 4, 2016 – Hanover School Division is pleased to partner with the Steinbach Credit Union (SCU) in establishing a student-operated Sabres Credit Union within the Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS). As a branch of the SCU, the credit union will serve a growing community of over 1,500 students at the SRSS.

The partnership with SCU was initiated by SRSS Business Education Teacher – Esther Penner, and fulfills an educational need identified by her Business Education students. Ms. Penner remarked, “One of the most requested work placements that I receive from students, is to work in a financial institution. Students are eager to gain hands-on experience helping others manage their finances in a professional setting.”

Under the supervision of SCU staff, student tellers will offer banking services to their fellow SRSS students. Initial services will allow for deposits, cash withdrawals (within set limits), and transfers of funds to and from Sabres Credit Union accounts. The student tellers will also help to assist members in the set-up of mobile banking, and educate their peers with regards to general banking functions. The Sabres Credit Union will be open between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., when school is in session.

Randy Dueck, Superintendent-CEO commented, “We are very excited to partner with the Steinbach Credit Union in offering this unique service to the SRSS community. Through this educational initiative, student participants will have the opportunity to develop their job skills, and benefit from a hands-on cooperative education experience. This is an excellent example of how schools can partner with communities to provide deeper learning for our students.”

In preparation for the branch opening, SCU and SRSS have worked together in training the Sabres Credit Union student employees. Geoff Dilts, SCU Steinbach Branch Manager commented, “SCU provided internal resources that would educate the students in the fundamentals of a credit union, creating internal policies, the importance of privacy, fraud prevention and the many other products and services available to them and their future members. We have also trained the Sabres Credit Union employees on how to be a teller and the importance of great customer service.”

Geoff Dilts further remarked, “SCU is proud of our tradition of supporting the community and we see this partnership as another way of demonstrating this commitment. Teaming up with SRSS in this initiative allowed us an opportunity to help the students learn more about financial products and services. We believe that the program will provide the students with valuable skills that can be applied in the workforce.”

The Sabres Credit Union grand opening is set for Thursday May 5, 2016.
