School Closures

January 17, 2025

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

We sincerely apologize for the delay in communicating the decision to close schools today due to the blizzard conditions. We understand the frustration and inconvenience this situation may have caused and would like to clarify how the decision was made.

At 6:00 a.m., when the initial determination regarding school operations was made, weather and road conditions in the Hanover School Division were clear, and visibility was good. Based on the forecast and conditions at that time and similar decisions made by our neighbouring school divisions, it was deemed safe to keep schools open. Making decisions based on weather forecasts versus current conditions can be challenging.

However, as the morning progressed, weather conditions deteriorated rapidly, creating hazardous driving conditions. By 8:00 a.m., it became clear that the safety of our students and staff could no longer be ensured. In light of this, and for everyone’s safety, we made the difficult but necessary decision to close schools, albeit later than we would have preferred. While today’s decision aligned with our school closure policy, we acknowledge the importance of timely communication and regret the delay.

We will review our decision-making and communication processes to ensure they are as timely and effective as possible. Your understanding and patience as we navigate unpredictable weather are greatly appreciated. The safety of our students and staff will always remain our top priority.

Joe Thiessen, Superintendent-CEO
Hanover School Division
