Award Winners
Congratulations to Steinbach Regional Secondary School student Macy Smith and Niverville Middle School Student Hayden Loeppky on receiving the 2026 Yes I Can! Award from the Manitoba Council for Exceptional Children. Macy was nominated by SRSS Learning Support Teacher Jackie Willis and Hayden was nominated by NMS Learning Support teacher Caitlyn Arnould.
The Yes I Can Awards were established to acknowledge the achievements of children and youth with disabilities; to overcome barriers caused by disabilities or public misconceptions; to encourage children and youth with disabilities to seek their highest potential; and to increase awareness of the abilities, aspirations, and personal qualities of people with disabilities.
We also want to recognize Educational Assistant Paula Schettler from Kleefeld School for being selected by the Manitoba Council for Exceptional Children as a nominee for Educational Assistant of the Year.
The following excerpt from her nomination reflects the dedication and care she brings to her work:
Paula is an extraordinary Educational Assistant whose dedication, expertise, and compassion have profoundly impacted students, families, and colleagues over more than 20 years. With background in pediatric nursing and specialized training in Low Arousal approaches, NCI, and beginner ASL, Paula supports students with complex needs. She creates a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where students feel understood and valued, forming deep connections that foster emotional regulation, social skills, and independence. Paul’s calm, patient presence allows her to de escalate high stress situations and provide effective, trauma informed support. Paula is a natural leader and mentor, sharing her knowledge with colleagues and continually pursuing professional growth.
